2026 Initial Mayor’s Court Education Courses

The Ohio Municipal League will be conducting Initial Mayor’s Court Trainings January 15 & 16, 2026.

Thursday, January 15, 2026 – GENERAL Session
 6-hour course covering offenses other than alcohol and drug-related traffic offenses.
Friday, January 16, 2026 – OVI Session
 6-hour course covering alcohol and drug-related traffic offenses.

Cost:

OML Members – $250 per course

Non-Members – $350 per course

Schedule:

Registration: Begins at 8:30 a.m.

Course Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.


Those who did not take the 2025 Refresher Courses must start over with the 6-hour Initial Courses.

Ohio Law Requirement: Each mayor of a municipal corporation who is authorized to conduct a mayor’s court pursuant to Chapter 1905 of the Ohio Revised Code and who wishes to exercise the jurisdiction and authority granted under that chapter must receive Supreme Court–approved training.
 
Certification: Ohio Municipal League has been certified by the Ohio Supreme Court to conduct the required classroom instruction. Each participant who successfully completes an accredited 
education program will receive a certificate attesting to the satisfactory completion of the study course.
 
Magistrate
: a licensed attorney who has practiced for the past 3 years in Ohio) must have this initial training before hearing court cases (per the Ohio Supreme Court. 


Newly Elected or Appointed Mayors: A newly elected or newly appointed mayor who wishes to conduct a mayor’s court and prosecute first offense OVI cases, as well as other non–alcohol- or drug-related traffic offenses, must obtain, within sixty (60) days of assuming office, the following:

  • 6 hours of classroom training for non-alcohol/drug-related traffic offenses (GENERAL course)
  • 6 hours of classroom instruction related to alcohol- and drug-related traffic offenses (OVI course)

Completion of both courses authorizes the mayor to hear cases through December 31 of the year immediately following the year in which the education was completed.

Continuing Education after completing the initial training:
Mayors who hear OVI cases must complete 3 hours of annual OVI continuing education and 3 hours of annual non-OVI continuing education.

Mayors who choose not to hear OVI cases are only required to complete the initial 6-hour GENERAL course and continue with 3 hours of non-OVI education annually thereafter.

No Show & Refund Policy: Email info@omlohio.org for cancellations. No refunds will be made unless cancellation is received in writing a week prior to the training. No refund for “no shows”.
